Asian Hornet Alert

URGENT ACTION NEEDED BY EVERYONE

On 18 Aug 18 an Asian Hornet was discovered alive (and captured) on a ferry in Poole heading for Cherbourg.

There is the possibility that this insect came from a nest, as yet undiscovered, in Poole.

We have been requested by Defra for everyone who cares about the survival of the honey bee in Dorset to take the following actions:

   1.            Place traps in your garden. Inspect every day and report any capture of an Asian Hornet (please freeze any insect that can be handed over to an inspector). The monitoring trap design can be found here http://www.nationalbeeunit.com/downloadNews.cfm?id=122 but a simple kill trap that you would use for wasps is acceptable at this time of year- bait with sugary carbohydrate such as beer or jam.

   2.            Keep vigilant for any hornets hawking outside bee hive(s) if you have them.

   3.            Particularly round the Poole Harbour area, look out for nests.

   4.            Print the attached warning notice and display in a local shop or other establishment.

REPORT ANY SIGHTINGS EITHER BY DOWNLOADING THE ASIAN HORNET APP TO YOUR MOBILE PHONE https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-app-to-report-asian-hornet-sightings COMPLETING ONE OF THE ONLINE FORMS FOUND HERE http://www.nationalbeeunit.com/index.cfm?sectionid=117 OR CONTACTING OUR SEASONAL BEE INSPECTOR KEVIN POPE kevin.pope@apha.gsi.gov.uk
